Our culinary team believes that hospital food should not only be nutritious, but delicious and exciting. In fact, UNC REX Healthcare has even made Conde Nast Traveler”s list of “9 Great Meals in Unexpected Places.”
Jim McGrody, Director of Culinary and Nutrition Services and Executive Chef Ryan Conklin are graduates of the Culinary Institute of America and understand that even though patients may have specialized nutritional needs, it doesn’t mean they have to sacrifice on quality or flavor. Jim McGrody and his culinary team strive to create specialized meals with healthy ingredients.

Courtyard Café
The Courtyard Café is UNC REX”s main dining room and café. It is located on the first floor of the hospital.
The Courtyard Café offers daily specials, including a fresh salad and produce bar featuring locally grown produce, Cib/o-grille and the Showtime Chefs in Motion station. There are a variety of gourmet food options for our patients and visitors.
The Courtyard Café is open daily from 6 am – 1 am.
Korner Café
Located near the Patient Tower entrance on the second floor of the hospital, the Korner Café offers additional dining options in a café setting.
Featured stations include:
Mezza Luna – fresh made to order saladsCaprese”s Deli – gourmet sandwiches, salads, desserts
The Korner Café is open Monday-Friday from 6 am – 3 pm.

Kardia Café
This innovative, award-winning restaurant is located on the bottom floor of the Heart and Vascular Hospital, adjoined to the main hospital. Kardia provides a unique culinary experience by introducing dishes that are healthy, but more importantly, delicious!
Kardia also makes fresh beverages daily and serves nitro cold brew coffee on tap (as well as delicious hot coffee).
Kardia Café is open Monday-Friday from 7 am – 7 pm.
Room Service
Our room service menu is available to patients between 6:45 am – 6:45 pm.
Our after hours menu is offered from 6:34 pm. to 1 a.m. with a limited menu for patients in the Emergency Department and Women”s Center.
Guests may take advantage of room service by purchasing a meal voucher from the Courtyard Café for $8 + tax.
