From humble beginnings, Easy Tiger Hostel is now a well-oiled backpacker factory.

This refurbed old hotel in the heart of town now has a whopping 104 beds – and they regularly have to turn away travellers – such is their reputation as THE place to stay in Phong Nha. It’s a lively, social hive of activity, and it’s a one-stop shop for tours, organised shuttles, pub and entertainment. An intimate homestay experience this is not, though the excellent English speaking staff are well-trained and have an impressively positive, professional attitude. The hostel, spread over two buildings, houses a series of four-bed backpacker dorms. The dorm rooms are well laid out, with large metal bunks and an ensuite shared hot water bathroom which means a respectable four-to-one ratio max. Each room comes with air-con, fan and direct access to a shared balcony that wraps around the building.

You also get a big locker, towel if needed, and individual plug, mosquito net and reading light per bed.Guests have access to a modest sized swimming pool at the foot of karst. Communal areas include the Jungle Bar which has a billiard table, outdoor patio and serves a mean burger, wood-fire pizza and happy Happy Hours. It’s a great place to meet other backpackers if you don’t get lost and drown in the crowd.Easy Tiger Hostel is affiliated with several ventures including Phong Nha Farmstay. Before you automatically head to Easy Tiger, you may want to consider some of the small family-owned homestays that will give you a more intimate experience with local flavour.
