Ugly but good is a bar on Bui Vien but it perfectly describes this stretch of bars and restaurants at the heart of the backpacker district. Its a crazy teaming mass of travellers and street smart locals. Great spot for grabbing a cold beer, sitting outside a bar and watching the world go by and the characters within it. I guarantee you will have many moments smiling to yourself at the characters on show…or having fun with them. The Vietnamese have a wicked sense of humour and can be great company…chat with the street vendors, smile and laugh, you will have a great time! Like any main tourist area…careful with you”re phone and wallet…and if it seems to good to be true it probably is! 😉
This is the back Packer hangout, not my cup of tea at night especially but for a walk to see the other side of tourism during the day take a look there are bar after bars all selling cheap booze and plenty of cheap eats as well, all looks like good food I have my favorite place and I have reviewed that, but the place is an eye opener at night

This is out first trip to Saigon. Looking for some fun, we went to Bui Vien to check out the scene. It definitely met those expectations. There are drunks, prostitutes, street hustlers, fire breathing kids, tons of little places to get street food if you are daring, “short-term” hotels to which to bring the aforementioned prostitutes, motor scooters careening wildly, and inexplicably, cart after cart hawking dried squid. What”s up with the squid? Looks disgusting, smells just like you”d imagine dried squid would smell like, didn”t see one person buy any,and yet there were vendors all over the place! Lots of locals mixed in with tourists, its worth a trip. My wife and I set up shop at the GO2 bar, sitting at a table on the sidewalk. Hard to explain, but its on a busy corner, and you can sit there and drink a beer and watch the goings-on. It”s a great venue for people-watching, but if you sit right at the sidewalk, you”ll get harassed by kids selling all kinds of junk. We were a few seats back from the very front. We stayed there for a couple of hours and had a good time. Worth a visit.
